I am somewhat new to the concept of a capsule wardrobe. I would say I started focusing on narrowing down my closet and what I wear about six months ago. I use to always feel like I shopped ALL the time but when I would get dressed for everyday outings, I would have nothing to put on. I had so many nice tops that were perfect for going out but not what you want to wear to target on a Saturday morning. This is when I finally decided it was time to clean out and refresh.

To me, a capsule wardrobe is a practice of editing your wardrobe down to your favorite and most classic pieces. Based on neutral colors that are perfect for easy swapping around, and shopping less often with more intention. Before you go shopping for the basics, the most important thing to do is CLEAN YOUR DANG CLOSET OUT. It’s not always the most fun thing to do, but it has to be done.

You should only have pieces in your closet that you use. That is the main key. Anything that you don’t wear or as our girl Marie Kondo says “doesn’t spark joy” needs to go. Once you narrow it down, you can then start to build your capsule wardrobe. The pieces above are based on an everyday style. I felt starting with everyday wear was much easier than an entire capsule wardrobe, because these are the pieces you are going to utilize most.

I find that having basic tees and sweatshirts are the absolute most useful things in my closet. I can wear them with jeans, under cardigans, with leggings, under coats, BASICALLY ANY COMBINATION. I have a few of these Topshop Tees and H&M hoodies in multiple colors (think gray, black, nude, and white). Once you have these basics you can pair them with basic jeans, black jeans, and even faux leather leggings. Depending on the weather or situation I would then throw on a cardigan or a coat in cooler weather. I recently bought this black Zara coat and I am OBSESSED. It is under $50 and the quality is amazing. I personally always finish my everyday outfits with white sneakers (specifically these white Vejas), my black cross body (which is classic), and gold hoops.

All of the items are linked below, but that doesn’t mean you have to be limited to those items. There are loads of similar options that you can pick from. I find that the best shops for these neutral and classic pieces are places like H&M, Zara, Topshop, Mango, and Nordstrom.
